Statutory Redundancy Pay

Is redundancy pay funded by the employer, or can they claim it back from the government?

I always assumed that the employer paid.
However my colleague (who is seldom right about anything) is convinced they pay it, but reclaim it from the government.

The Company pays it unless it is insolvent then the Government pay the minimum statutory amount.
^^ I second that.

Thanks. I thought so, otherwise they would have no deterrent to sacking people.
Redundancy isn't sacking.

OK, but it feels the same.

(Yes, I am going through it now)
Sorry Chuck, but redundancy is sacking, in that sacking is poor slang for dismissal, and redundancy is one of several fair reasons for dismissal.
Fair in the legal sense, rather than it being necessarily just.
Hop, don't lose heart, don't forget it's the job that's finished not you. Been through it 5 times and know how you feel.

Thanks John.

In my line of work I can find employment, but it looks like it will be on hugely differing shifts. It therefore impacts on the family considerably.

Once I am settled in a new job, I will probably look back and say it was for the better.
