I always use my debit card for shopping etc, but when i log into my online banking it always takes a few days for the transaction to appear on my statement.

I did ring and ask them about this, but they said it depends on when the shop.

Thing is, is it happens with every shop I use it in.

When I used to be with NatWest the transaction would show on my online statement within a few hours.

I would have thought a large bank like HSBC but have the most upto date system.

Does anyone know why this is the case? and to other HSBC customers have the same issue?

I don't understand this - my bank transactions usually show on the next bank working day (e.g. if I use the card on a Friday, it'll show on the account on a Monday).
With HSBC, the transaction will take a few days to actually appear on your statement but if you look at your available credit, it it usually taken from that within a few hours. For example, you have £100 in your HSBC account and you spend £20 on your debit card, the transaction will not appear on your statement but it will show your available balance as £80.
Good point bagpuss, do you have access to your account on-line, muchlovex? We check ours all the time that way.
All HSBC debit card payments are processed through an payment authorisation system. This system helps to combat fraudulent transactions by doing extra checks before the money eventually is released from the bank account and if necessary a block may be placed on the account. Nowadays Pin and chip transactions don't need all the extra checks, however internet payments do.

no. My account does not seem to update. For example I used my card yesterday, and I've checked my account today and no transaction appears, nor does it deduct the amount.

Sorry. just realised that today is weekend,s o hopefully the transaction with show tomorrow.
We're with Natwest and if we use our cards over the weekend, it will show the transaction but not the details (which card or shop etc) until Tuesday.
This doesn't directly answer your question, but, we have Bank accounts in both Spain and the UK. It is the case that Spanish Debit Card transactions are processed almost instantly to my account, whilst UK transactions take anything up to four days.
We lived in Canada for a while and they take the money instantly as well! This was 12 or more years ago! Why are we so behind?
