i have a chance at an interview tomorrow. the invite to attend came a few days ago but i was away on hol and oinly saw it today. the "potential" employer can only do interviews tomorrow...and i cant get a day off work at this late stage. i plan to ring my employer and say I am ill tomorrow. I NEVER do sickies...and i feel so guilty about it. What would YOU do?

PS - I work for a doctor - which makes a mystery illness lasting one day only even more suspicious!

dont pretend you are sick then, just say a family emergency that way they tend not to pry
I hate ppl pulling sickies but in this case - ok. Make it up by doing overtime. Just tell boss you got stomach cramps.

I agree entirely with 4get. They have no right to ask what the problem is.
Pull a sickie, it's the only answer. Have you tried asking the interviewer if they are doing later than normal interviews, because you could say then that you have a dental appointment.
yes just put on a sad face and say 'I really dont want to talk about it'
Yeah - pull a sickie. I work at a doctor's too - don't worry about it and certainly don't feel guilty. You might be leaving soon anyway :-)
Tell your Employer that you have been 'Sick' all night . AB Server was ill yesterday but is OK Today. It's a 24hr Bug that is going round !

Still think it's better to ring in in the morning and say you have a family emergency. Things like that happen. If you pull a sicky they will be asking you if you feel better on Wednesday and you will feel awkward. People don't question 'family emergencies' if they are sensible and, as 4get says, you can always say you would rather not talk about it.

yeah - stomach cramps is kinda what i was going to go for. i dont feel confident in saying there is a family emergency as ...everyone at work knows i have no family (except the husband) .

ooooerrrr - i hate lying...but i dont want to mmiss the interview (one of the reasons i am looking for another job is that im not happy in this one)

thanks all for advice - keep it coming.

What time is the interview? Couldn't you say you've got a doctors/dentist appointment and then you could still go to work either before or after the interview.
One option is not to go to the interview.

In these troubled times, it would be a shame to lose a job you already have through lying to attend a last-minute interview for a job you might not get or even want (once you'd seen it).
I wouldn't lie - If you could arrange the interview around your lunch break, I would ask for an extended one to coincide with it.

If you don't have a lunch break, I would still ask for some time off during your shift, that way, questions probably wouldn't be asked & you wouldn't feel so guilty.

Good luck.

oh smudge - if i COULD arrange it around a lunch hour it would be great - but the odd hours i work simply don't fit in. goodness I am more nervous about how i will get the day off than how the interview will go. Ellipsis you are right - one way is just not to go but i do want to get out of this job. :-(

there is no doubt that most of my colleagues wouldn't think twice about calling in ill (by the way i've not mentioned to ANY work colleagues I am looking elsewhere for a job)
Question Author
ok - i am a nerd, blessed with an overactive conscience / guilt gland....i know most (not all of ) you would ring in ill. and as my current employer takes tthe p**** big time(hence why i am looking elsewhere) i shouldn't feel guilty but i DO so:

I have arranged with a colleague to work part of my afternoon / evening shift . then i will dash back to finish my evening shift.(I have to pay her mind) ... it will be a tight squeeze time wise but i would have sleepless nights about fibbing...how sad / mad am I???!!!!
Well done eve! It'll be worth you paying your colleague, if only for peace of mind!

I'd have done exactly the same if I couldn't have extended my lunch hour, or got some other time off!

I always think that 'Porkies' can sometimes catch you out!

Good luck at your interview. ;o}
and if the interviewer asks have you got today off - you'd feel uncomfortable lying and it might show , leaving them to believe you weren't telling the truth

Good Luck anyway
