My husband is a self employed builder and he employs sub contractors. I pay them through CIS scheme and deduct tax. I struggle to get invoices from the subbies for the work they do. Do they have to give me invoices or are the monthly pay statements that I give them enough. I hate to keep nagging them and wondered if I am wasting my time on unnecessary paperwork.
thanks for help

You don't need their invoices since you deduct tax & NI and provide their monthly statements.
Simple answer is to only pay after you have received the invoice. You do need invoices from them so you must change their behaviour to ensure that you will not be in trouble if the tax man calls to check your books.
I used to pay subbies under the SC60 scheme but since I did it the rules have changed. When I did it you did not need an invoice from the subbie you just kept a record of payments on the green card and reported the figures at the year end. Just give the tax office a call and ask them what the current situation is; you are quite correct though to make the deductions unless they are officially self employed and therefore responsible for their own tax.
You will find that the tax office will be very helpful.
