Hello all,
I want to propose to my girlfriend, but I only have 300 to spend on an engagement ring. Any ideas as to how I can get something nice or where?

try local antique shops, theres one near us that specialises in jewellery. or failing that some from chain store jewellers like H Samuel do some lovely ones! And if it was me I'd just be thrilled by the proposal and wouldn't want my boyfriend to go overboard on the ring, need to save the money for a beautiful wedding dress!

Sophie- That's sweet. I will tell her that, regardless of whether she likes the ring or not! I will try the antique shops. Ta.

Vanilla- I did want cheap, but I don't think I could bring myself to buy from argos. That's one step beneath me. :-)

Wow, thanks!
Good to go!
Many jewellers do second hand jewellery - a bargain because the VAT is already paid!
They are polished and presented in a little box so no-one would ever know.
My own much-loved ring was not at all expensive, but pretty and very "me". It was the giver I wanted, not the gift!
First of all .... congratulations!! Sure she will accept.

I agree with the second-hand theme. When you buy new, the largest part of the cost is in the design and retail value. These days there is no set design or fashion, everything is vintage and retro.

There used to be a 'stigma' attached to having a 'second-hand' ring, it was considered unlucky. That's because they only came on the market if the relationship failed, as parents rings were passed onto future new fiancees. This is no longer the case, as time changed everyone wanted new so the heirlooms were sold and proceeds divided.

I would recommed something 'victorian' as the prices are still affordable and the designs are quite ornate, if you follow women's fashion (?) you will notice we are buying copies of these designs as costume jewellery.

I wish you both well.
have you asked her yet??
Try a second hand jewellers! And barter your head off, don't ask, don't get! Congratulations!
My girlfriend gave me a love ring that cost over 4,000 pounds. If she had given me one for 300 I'd have been just as happy.Go to argos, samuel or look around there are pleantly of rings in the sales right now.
