why do we have fingernails

just wondering why we have fingernails what are there purpose besides biting lol

to protect the ends of your fingers ?!
Plus nail varnish would look silly just applied to finger stumps.
stops the ends of fingers from fraying.

why do the ends of our fingers need protecting and i also thought from claws but whe in evolutionary process did we have claws
All right for scratching someone's eyes out if you are angry. Or nice for colouring with nail polish and growing long so that you can admire them. And for digging out things from inaccessible places. I am sure there are many more uses.

Why do we have fingernails?

Makes it easy to get "eye crud" out.
But if they were to protect the ends of your fingers, shouldn't they actually be over your finger tips, but then they'd crack, wouldn't it then be best to have them on the opposite side of your fingers?
