My daughter has just phoned me as she shut her finger in the car door whilst pickiung her little girl up for playgroup. She is feeling very sick and giddy.......infact she fainted while she was talking to me on the phone. Lucky enough she was at home and her partner is with her. I told her partner to lay her down on sofa with feet on cushions to higher them. After a while she came round but is in terrible pain. She said she has caught her index finger halfway up and the finger nail is already black as well as the finger. Before she phoned she had her finger in cold water but it made her feel very sick. I told her it is most likely shock. Just wondered if anyone was on here Sqad maybe.I believe that the hospital cannot do anything for it even if it is broken so told her to take some painkillers, nurofen or simular. and rest it. Have I told her the right thing.? Or is there anything else I should have told her. Many thanks

I'm not Sqad.. but my Husband had a really nasty finger injury recently.. I wont go into details as I have just eaten my lunch! But his fingernail went black instantly and the wound bled a lot.

The nausea and dizziness is more than likely the shock of it all.... I am pathetic when I get the slightest proper injury and once I also vomited and nearly passed out.

She needs to lie still - sip water and calm down.

The pain wont go away - but she will start to feel less faint... Poor girl!!
If she can face a trip to A&E plus the long wait to be seen it may put her mind at rest.
If there is any possibility the finger is broken she needs to go to a&e. A misaligned fracture can cause blood flow to the fingertip to be compromised. It does sound like your daughter is in shock and she needs to eat or drink something sweet (shock causes blood sugar to drop).
Did the same thing three weeks ago, only with my thumb, she has my sympathy, it don`t half hurt, thumb nail now black. Someone told me my GP would drill a hole in the nail to relieve the blood pressure, but being a coward, I declined.
That sounds like a visit to casualty as far as I'm concerned.
Go with all the advice here - A&E - sooner rather than later before all the office party problems start coming in.

I've seen two instances of fingers in car doors, neither of which turned out ot be anything more serious than some nasty bruises, alarming though it looked at the time. But the possibility of fracture is there, and rather sort it now than let it ruin her Christmas completely.
lilachen....you advice is perfect.

Painful situation which may take a week to settle.
Oh my God! Go A & E as soon as before you get all the people who have slipped on the ice or snow. I trapped my finger once I was in agony! Horrible horrible horrible - they will put a needle through the nail which doesn't hurt at all compared to the pain already being experienced which is the pressure of the blood accumulaing in the finger, once that pressure is relieved - all the pain will go. You should go quick and hold hand at chest level - it hurts when lowered. You can do this yourself with a warm needle through the nail. As soon as the blood flows out the pain will stop. And check for any other damage. Good Luck
