my younger brother has had blood in his poo for about, he says, 2 years (why he's left it this long i don't know) and recently mentioned it to me, i have made an appointment at our doctors but he's now saying he does not want to go...he's only 20yrs old and i am extremely worried, i know it could be anything from piles to cancer, i would be grateful if anyone could advise on anything else it could be...?? he says it hurts sometimes when he goes for a poo but does not feel constipated, the blood is bright red and is sometimes on the paper when he wipes himself
thanx to anyone who can help

Well it sounds like the blood is fresh which would suggest it could well be piles. I would sit him down (on a cussion) and persuade him to go to the doctors. Better still if you know what to look for why not get a rubber glove, a bit of KY jelly and have a rumage around yourself? In all seriousnes though this did happen to me once and it was because I was using too much nasal decongestant (which goes to show how evil that stuff is). Get him to the quacks.
Sounds very much like haemorroids. You don't have to be constipated to have them. Or it could be just a little cut which opens when he goes to the loo. Best get it checked then he'll sleep better!!
buy him a bowel cancer testing kit from the chemist then he can at least test himself for something and it may shock him into going to the Dr's 20 is an embarassing age to go to the docs with any kind of below the belt condition.
elmtree good idea hun x
kite....you certanly are on form today.
so are you squad, son
My dad also had blood coming out and he left it for too long until he found out that it was colon cancer. Unfortunately it spread, and although he is still alive, he is not doing well.
I dont mean to scare you, its unlikely that at his age he will have cancer, but you never know. Best not to be in doubt and have it checked out by a doctor (and get a second opinion) to rule out any life threatening thing
I hope you are going with him to reassure him, otherwise he will never make it to the surgery.
Don't take no for an answer. Drag him there if necessary. Or phone the GP and explain the situation. He needs to be seen/examined. Early diagnosis/treatment is the key to a successful outcome. i.e. no dying involved!!
piles ,hemeroids, polyps, could even have a skin tear, but unless hes sees a doctor its a case of put up and shut up im afraid its down to him good luck
Aged 20yrs, been going on for 2yrs
1) Piles
2) Fissure in ano (painful though)
3) Colonic polyps.

Almost certainly not malignancy.

GP opinion essential.

thanx for all your advice ppl, docs appointment is for tomorrow and yeah i am gona drag him there, kicking and screaming if i need to
I had this recently and also left it a few years as i was embarrased. i went to the doc and yes she had to have a quick look, nothing major tho, and it was an anal fissure, a small tear in the skin. this causes great pain when passing poo, like glass being pooed out!, and also fresh blood on the toilet paper. whereas i think cancerous blood is more in the poo itslef.
a simple cream did the trick, i find it comes back when i eat rubbish.
make him go and let us know wot it was

will do, thanx
:-)
Most GP surgeries or clinics have a regular 'bum clinic' (Their words not mine!) A simple sigmoidoscopy will give the answers straight away. If it is anything further 'up' The earlier it is checked the better. I know the subject is taboo for some, but tell him not to 'die of embarrasment!' - this will kick him into gear and take way a lot of worry for you all!
