Head Lice

My daughter who is 8 has head lice for the very first time. We have used Hedrin, which did not work. Can anyone recommend a good head lice product.

Try putting loads of conditioner in her hair and then combing through with a Nitty Gritty comb. The Nitty Gritty combs are expensive (just under £10), but from many years experience it is the only one which really does the job well. It takes out the lice and the nits (eggs), where the other combs only take out the lice, so it cuts down the length of time you have to spend doing the combing every day.

While in the bath cover hair with shampoo, tell her to lie back for 2mins with scalp submerged. The lice will drown.

Do same often to catch hatching knits and eradicate the problem.

Termabulan's advice is not correct - if headlice drowned that easily all that would be needed to clear an infestation would be regualr baths.
This site http://lancaster.unl.edu/pest/lice/headlice018 .shtml
suggests you'd have to marinate child overnight to have a drowning effect.
The nit comb is the ultimate tool - use daily - once you've broken their legs they can't breed. If only that were true for people....

Thank you so much for all the answers. The last website address was interesting. I learnt that small black flecks on the scalp can be another giveaway sign of lice as these are their faeces!! Lovely!!

Oh dear Terambulan if only it were that simple - a quick day out at the swimming pool would do the trick in that case.. No it's as most have said... the only way is conditioner and the nit comb every night after her bath,,My daughter has 3 boys and has tried absolutely everything on the market and the comb is the only thing that works..

I have two daughters, both with long hair, and headlice are a complete and utter pain. The ONLY thing I have found to work is sitting there, plastering their hair in conditioner, and comb, comb, comb... a cheapo nit comb just as good as the expensive ones. You have to do this for days on end, but it is the only way i've got rid of my girls headlice, they seem really resilient these days. Tea Tree is meant to help so I use tea tree conditioner. You have my sympathy!!!

I must admit I have just started using hair straighteners on both my daughter's hair - my son wont let me near him!!

I cant imagine the head lice or eggs would survive being fried!

I have also just bought the Nitty Gritty Repellent Spray and Nitty Gritty comb that works really well.

I also colour my hair and cant imagine a head lice surviving this either.

You will see foxes swim a lake and finally duck their snouts, to rid/drown their fleas. Drowning does work and the shampooing is to stop the lice jumping from the head to avoid the process.

Another quick remedy: Ask your local salon for a plastic head cap (they use them for hair-coloring). Place the cap on head and quickly spritz inside cap with fly killer. Secure cap with clip & leave for 3mins. Lice dead!

Careful person doesn't inhale fly-killer fumes.

tarambulan we are tailking about a kid's hair and not an infected rug!!!!!!!!!!!! For heven's sake the poor child is only 8 bless her yu cannot use insect cide for flies on her hair and head lice do not drown they can survive up to 14-18 hour in water . the best is the nix comb and straighters plus some headlice medicine though if yu over use them the nix will resist them but HEY JUST FRY THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vodka and fly spray - sounds and little drastic for an 8 year old!
