Its very abrasive compared to 'ordinary' toothpaste. Therefore over time it will wear the surface enamel and in some cases this will allow 'shine through' of the underlying dentine which is darker/more yellow in colour

My dentist said he used a whitening toothpaste once an day and a normal one the rest of the time.
