Churchill, in describing Russia in 1939 said "...a riddle wrapped in mystery inside an enigma" ..
The term is probably more intense that a mystery. By implication, a mystery can be solved, not so with an enigma...something that baffles understanding and cannot be explained.... according to one source...

It was also the name given to a code machine used by the Germans (that dropped bombs on me, the b'stards) during the second world war. But, that "Enigma" was solved.
