Can't seem to find any shoes that are comfortable these days and consequently am living in flip flops, not great in the rain. I really want some nice shoes that look fashionable but are comfortable too, I used to live in stilletoes but can't wear them these days, even those flatie slippers seems to rub-any suggestions how i can get my feet back into proper shoes. I am only 40, i don't have bunions, corns or nasty feet but everything i try seems to rub or hurt

Try crocs as they are soooo comfy.
I got my mum some shoes from M&S for Christmas for my dad to give her as they do this extra comfy range and she said they're really good.
Have you tried softer fabric shoes or rubbing vaseline into leather type shoes to make them softer?

Have you had your feet measured recently? You've probably been buying shoes in the same size since your teens and you never know, your feet may have altered. Go along to your local Clarks shoe shop and ask for your feet to be measured. You may even be an extra wide, which may explain all the rubbing. If your feet are wider now then apart from Clarks, Evans do shoes in a wider fitting.

and any other time in the year i wear converse or some sweet little pumps from topshop who are pretty good when it comes to comfort. sounds bonkers but whenever i get some new shoes i wear them around the house with a pair of thick socks before wearing them normally - really helps my heels and sides of feet.

I wear crocs, they're not the most flattering I agree but just find them so comfy and they keep my feet cool.
Sketchers do some really comfy stuff as well.

Greatest sympathy to Janet. I have a bad back and wide feet. The only shoes I can wear are wide fitting and low heeled, which most shoe shops interpret as granny shoes and which I won't wear because i don't have the matching crimplene pleated skirt with elasticated waist. So I end up in flip flops, or posher flipflops made by eg doc martens, or bear foot, or boots in winter. Sometimes I can get a decent shoe but it will take months to break in by which time it looks kernackerd, but might be wearable.
I asked in Clarks in Warrington if they would measure my feet and was told 'we don't measure adults modom', so modom won't buy from them any more.
