I get a lot of pain and use icepacks or products like biofreeze on my arms and hands and usually voltarol (pain relieving gel) on my legs.

I often put them in cold water and have a cold air blower on them especially if it's keeping me aware at night.

Rub on linament like deep heat or tiger balm is quite good

Don't know whether you count that as drugs you're still absorbing through the skin - not pills though

Hot poultice using a few drops or Myrrh. Put this on your joints, it’s a bit smelly but my dad has Rumatoid (sp?) arthritis and it has helped him!

A nun at our convent school was renowned for replying to such requests, ' the suffering lord jesus on the cross didn't have an aspirin'. A very bad girl said back one day, 'in that case sister may I have a sponge soaked in vinegar?'

I hesitate to suggest you try similar.
