Someone I was annoying on a train by my incessant coughing recommended I try a remedy from Canada which I thought she said was called Ributussin, but I can't find anything by this name.

Any idea what it could be she was referring to?

Its Called Robitussin. If you have had a cold recently i suspect your cough is due to Postnasal Drip so anything to dry the secretions will help. Codiene Linctus also helps and will be cheaper than Robitussin.
See your Gp if it doesnt go away as it might be due to something like Asthma
You can't buy codeine linctus over the counter any more, I tried to buy some for a friend of mine and was told by the pharmacist that apparently alcoholics had been buying it to drink ( a fast and cheap way of getting drunk! )
