i wash my daughters hair nearly every day, however ive found that even after washing she still has an unpleasant smell around the crown of her head as though i havent washed it in days, she wears her hair in a pony tail every day and i use silvikrin hairspray could this have anything to do with it, the shampoos/conditioners i use are herbal essence, pantene, loreal elvive and v05, im finding im having to wash my hair every day as well but im not sure if its just because im getting paranoid about having smelly hair (i blow dry my hair and straighten it, i do find if i leave it to dry naturally the shampoo smell lasts longer why is this?) it doesnt on my daughter

How old is your daughter, I assume if you are washing her hair then she must be fairly young. I am not a mum but I dont think her hair should be washed this often, there is no need and also dont think you should use hairspray on her either. If there is a smell, then take her to the GP there may be a scalp problem, though I would doubt it, or alternatively ask some one else to smell it as you could be making an issue out of nothing.

my daughter is 10 and i have noticed it for a while, i tend to wash it so regular as im paranoid about the smell, maybe its just me being paranoid, no one else has ever mentioned it but its definately there, i know when i was young i didnt have my hair washed that often, do you think it could be possibly a build up of hairspray etc on her scalp ive heard that theirs a shampoo for this, thanks for your answer

I am not entirely sure leighkaty. but yes I did not have my hair washed that often at that age. Also todays shampoos are not like the ones of 20 or 30 years ago, these days they are full of heaven knows what, how about trying something less harsh like baby shampoo and no hairspray, todays shampoos will also strip hair of goodness especially youngsters hair. You could be obsessing about it, you know like if you think you have bad breath you are constantly brushing your teeth even though the problem has gone.

I would try a milder shampoo and leave her hair for a few days, and don't smell it!!!!!!
try different shampoos.keep it real.hitch07
Maybe where she has her hair up in a ponytail, with the hairspray everyday it could be sweat or her hair is unable to "breathe"?
Both my youngest daughters have ponytails everyschool day but i dont use hairspray & ive not noticed a smell.
Does she have her hair down when shes not at school?

well thanks for your answers i will try using milder shampoos and no hairspray i will actually still look into the shampoo especialy for build up of products on the scalp see if that helps
Question Author
no she always has her hair up its very long and she's to impatient to wait for me to blow dry it after i have washed it and as its wavy it looks a mess down at the minute without blow drying it but ive noticed the smell when i do blow dry it as well, so maybe a good cut and the natural approach is prob best
Its worth giving it a try,
Maybe if her hair is left down with no hairspray (totally understand why you use hairspray!) at the weekends for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference

The herbal essence range is quite nice and gentle - maybe you could even try a baby shampoo will be ever so gentle - just in case something is irritating her scalp...
Although if i ever think something smells once i am convinced it does - even if no one else can smell it!
I think at your daughter age i only had my haor washed once or twice a week...i would also recommend not using hairspray - it just causes un-needed build up. If she has stray bits that get in her face you canget really pretty thin head bands that will keep them back. Maybe try pigtails or something as it could be that in the warm weather it can't 'breathe' properly as someone else mentioned!
try neutrogena, that removes build up. or try tea tree shampoo, that is very gentle but mildly antiseptic and has a very fresh smell.
It is more likely to be the scalp than the hair.
Also check the ears, my son's ears smell dreadful, dead skin behind them, he's had it from a baby. no medical problem just stinky
Take her to a hairdresser, who will have seen (and smelled!) hundreds of heads of hair, for a second opinion.
