This is a serious question - maybe you can assist. When a woman menstruates, I understand that the flow can be heavier during some parts of the cycle, and heavier for some women than others. That said, i can't imagine the flow is that great that a 'heavy' towel / tampon would not suffice for all requirements. So, why do they make 'heavy' and 'light' pads and tampons, when the 'heavy' absorabcny must by dwefinition work for both?

Haven't you noticed the the 'lights' are smaller and generally thinner. So if you are fortunate enough to be 'light' then why use a thick uncomfortable pad?

Not only that, but if you were having a light day but used a super tampon, designed for heavy flow, then its quite painful and not good for your body when you remove it as it hasn't absorbed enough. Also, if you were to use a super and your period was light, then you'd be inclined to maybe forget to change it when you should and if you leave it for too long you can be prone to Toxic Shock Syndrome which can kill, and if you use a towel, its just not hygenic to leave it for too long. Greedyfly and Lennon - thanks so much for your informative answers, I have to confess that having grown up with two sisters, and having three daughters, I have never examined their sanitary requirements closely - it just never occured to me. As for SFT42, remember, humour doesn't always translate via the written world, so you are in deep trouble!

Nor me either sft! My Dad had to put up with my Mum, me and little sister and all those hormones! I respect him deeply for being man enough to dart out in emergencies to buy us a particular size of s.towel when needed! Now I just feel sorry for my husband, who does the same for me but has the prospect of two daughters who will be asking the same question in a few years time.....!

just for the record, you're seriously underestimating the differnences between different women, and different stages of life are relevant. after my second child i needed blood transfusions during each period for nearly a year, there's no tampon or pad combiantions going to cope with that. p.s. im glad sft hasn't changed ;-)
