Burning desire for a tan

Experts have warned the risk of developing skin cancer has trebled over the last ten years due to the people's burning desire for sun kissed skin. The emergence of super-powerful sunbeds means getting the perfect tan is easily done. Extra strong sunlamps used in many sunbeds emit as much as three times the harmful UV rays as sunbeds did ten years ago. Studies show that using sunbeds as a teenager can radically increase the risk of skin cancer.

What do you think about sunbeds generally? Should there be laws preventing under-18s using them? Or should be it completely up to the individual as to whether or not they use them regardless of the lethal consequences?

Once in a while is ok, especially during the winter months it can give you a bit of a lift if you're a SAD case like me.
Pa, the little tangerine skin chasers can often look old enough to do many things with enough trowel slap and knicker flashing skirts. I dont know what the age limit on these things is and of course I agree there should be a limit (under 16 or whatever) but I was suggesting that rather than just being denied it, that they should know (much like they do with faaags and booze) why, even though this will never deter them.

Incidentally my wifes cousin was a regular sunbedder in her teens and, now 25 has had at least 4 cancerous skin lumps removed in the last year and a half.

I was given one of these for Christmas about three years ago... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumb er/4450010/Trail/C%24cip%3D50116.Bathroom%2Ban d%2Bpersonal%2Bcare%3EC%24cip%3D50145.Personal %2Bcare%3EC%24cip%3D50156.Air%2Bbrush%2Bmake-u p%2Band%2Btanning.htm

One of the strangest presents I've received, LOL! Anyway, it's sat in our spare room since then. As good as I feel with a tan, I just don't think it's worth taking the risk.

I'm even more careful on holidays, etc. since I accompanied my last boyfriend to The Mole Clinic and he was told he had to keep a very close eye of three of his moles. He used sunbeds regularly in the past, as recommended by his GP for his eczema and psoriasis. x
P, I could discuss this all day, but it rankles me to contribute to these pink posts of corporate sponsored drivel. If we ignore it, maybe it will go away.

LOL.....O+P...how very funny
I will not contribute my thoughts to this corporate / sponsored question.
yes,i think there should be laws preventing under 18's using them, after that age then obviously it would be up to the individual, but in my opinion it's safer to use a spray on.
Champagne, I'm in total agreeance with you, I'm 27 I have blonde hair, am naturally quite pale, with a few freckles, and feel exactly the same about sunbeds as you. I generally have a 3min sunbed once a month, predominantly for my own vanity and confidence, and am more worried about what things like smoking and drinking do to my health. With the climate changing the risk of cancer is increasing for everyone, I know I am slightly more at risk, but it is my choice.
My gym does question peoples age when they go onto the sun beds, and there is a no under 18 policy on the beds, but then the gym had a no under 18 policy too, so they would not really be using it anyway. There is also strict monitoring of how many sessions you have a week, etc.
I would certainly not class myself as a previously mentiuoned 'lil dolly birds or "little tangerine skin chaser". But admittedly I do think it is wrong for young impressionable girls to feel the need to get tango'd, it does look ridiculous, I am all for there being a law stating that only over 18's can use them.
naz - you're back!
Yep, I'm back ... and I'm bad.

Y'know that feeling you get when a big blue flash comes from under the desk, it's kinda, ''that's not right'', followed by the smell of burning plastic?

Well the fan on my PSU seized-up, resulting in a 6 inch square oven bolted to the back of my PC ...

Anyhooooo, I stuck a new one in there last night and I'm back. The competition will be judged tonight, better late than never.
(Looks over shoulder to make sure noone is listening)

Did you know that ummmm claimed she had won the competition??????

:o0

I'm not leaking any info until later ... about 8pm I reckon.

Yeah why is your question pink?
I think you should be 16 or over in order to use a sunbed. The problem is that a lot of 16, 17 or 18 year olds go on holidays with their mates and a suntan is considered body beautiful. When they return they're often going to want to top up their tan now and then. I'm just thinking of when I was 17 and I used to get into pubs & clubs which were meant to be for over 21's!! Even then I remember seeing some of the women looking gorgeous with all year round tans, so of course others are going to want to aspire to that.

However, I do feel that the tanning salons should be a lot more strict on peoples' usage. For example, ensuring that the sunbed is only used once in 48 hours as recommended, or that people only use half their normal session if the tubes are renewed. A lot of these gyms or tanning shops don't take on as much responsibility or give out as much advice as they should.

Octavius, you can call them what you like. If that makes me a tangerine bimbo then you carry on thinking that!!

So do you think we should also put an age limit on going to hot sunny countries.?
Should there be 'tan police' on beaches all over the world to check our sunfactor number?
Is it only sunbeds that cause skin cancer?

As Dot first stated, this isn't really a proper question - it is prompting an open discussion...................
like a 'CHAT ROOM'!!!
