Sometimes tinnitus seems loud and sometimes quiet. Be comforted that you won't always have it as loud as it seems. You can retrain your brain to not notice the sound so much, like the way you don't notice the sound of your fridge- until you switch it off! the key is relaxing and not worrying about it. If you get stressed with the sound you are actually inviting your brain to pay more attention to it, when you want the opposite to happen.
I find leaving on a TV low at night helps distract my brain to listen to the tv not the sounds in my head. Radio 4 would work too. You can get special boxes that emit soothing sounds, such as the sea etc that counteract the sounds.

It could also be that you have a slight ear infection which is causing this, and so it will not be permanent. You could also try altering your diet- do a 4 week detox and see if that helps the symptoms. If you have a stressful job you may want to look at changing that too. I find mine gets so much louder when I am stressed. x

scarlett are yuo a therapist
Adding to scarlett's good advice, I find that certain foods aggravate the condition. Salt being the primary offender. You'll probably learn to detect flare-ups after certain meals. No known cures, although using masking sounds seems to help for most... Best of luck!

i think you just have to live with it

No I'm not a therapist, but I do suffer from Tinnitus myself.
ive recently developed tinnitus...
i think its work related, even though i wear ear plugs at work... saw the works nurse and was told my hearing is good for my age !!!
when i asked about the constant ringing he said "go see your G.P."

I find its very loud one day, back ground noise the next..
My daughter has just had about of a few weeks tinnitus, pounding ears and strange feelings in the ears, with dizziness and travel sick type feelings. The GP said she had an infection like Labrynthitis and prescribed antibiotics and it went.
Don't drink fizzy drinks like bitter lemon that have quinine in them - makes it much worse. Sympathise wholeheartedly with you - had it for 8 years now, push for an appointment with you ENT department and ask for a masker. it's like a hearding aid that you put in your ear and makes a gentle 'ssshhh' noise that masks the tinnitus.
