My sister is recieving a unusual ammount of comments from men suggesting she is a homosexual, even though she is a very femanine woman. Is this some current pulling/put down technique thats going on at the moment? (I've been married 11yrs). She is begginning to get anxious about her appearance as a result of all this.

Thanks, Hamish (the nieve)

I know a couple of lesbians who are very, very feminine women. Really, drop dead gorgeous. You might want to re-think your stereotype there!! Not quite sure why your sister should be worried, as men who would say this to her in an attemtpo at "chat up" are obviously not really worth bothering about, are they? She should be glad they think she's homosexual!!!

Tell her not to worry. I am a lesbian, a mother of two and am considered very feminine and certainly don't conform to the lesbian 'stereotype' that still seems to fascinate certain immature people like your sister's tormentors.

This is just a fine example of rude men opening their mouths before thinking and showing little respect for her as a woman, regardless of her sexual orientation.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were hoping she would go out with them 'to prove' she is straight. They are pathetic, she is fine and I hope she learns to ignore these idiots and lives happily ever after.

Dru - but Hamish and his sis obviously believe in the same stereotypes - why else would he point out that she's very feminine, and say that she's "anxious about her appearance as a result of all this"? It's not just weird men on the pull who are prone to prejudice about appearances.

sounds as if it's pulling and putting down... some men seem to think you can do both at once, then wonder why it doesn't work.

Or of course it may take the form 'Wanna go out for a drink with me?... Why not? You gay or something?' This can also be ignored. Tell your sister there's no guaranteed way to dress that will repel clowns.

They are trying to get her to PROVE shes not a lesbian by sleeping with them.
All of the above are spot on. Tell her not to worry. I'm a lesbian and am tall and thin with very long dark hair and wear lots of make-up. Im quite girly actually. A lot of men who've tried to chat me up seemed to think I was a challenge and am just waiting for the right man to come along and show me how its done or that I was only saying I was a lesbian to try and turn them on. yeah right. just shows you how big-headed some men can be. you never mentioned if these men are work colleagues or what, but tell your sister the best thing she can do is give them a scathing look and say 'so, what if I was, have you got a problem with that, and even if i'm not, cretins like you would make me want to be gay?' or else just ignore them completely.
Would these comments happen to come from men who have been turned down by your sister? I believe some men are of the opinion that any women who wouldn't want to sleep with them must be a lesbian!
shazbang, are you sure...are you really sure......final answer.....you don't want to change your mind.....perhaps you haven't met the right man yet? ;)

Hi Thanks for the responces folks, I guess as she is tying to find a man she doesn't want to be giving signals that she is not interested in men, to cover the former.

I dont know anyone who I know is a lesbian, but I do know some gay blokes, and there are usually some signals even in the 'quiet' ones (not always in appearance).

The key thing I am trying to find out is if there is a 'culture' or a fad of saying this in order to pull as DMA has suggested.

Hehe, yes Stevie im sure. Trust me, if you seen my girlfriend you'd understand. ;-)
I agree with DMA,Hamish. However,I wouldn't say it's a recent fad.I had the same old sad line trotted out to me in the 80s,for precisely that reason!
Im getting good at this agony uncle bit. Cud be a new career 4 me.
