Just had two petticoat tails shortbreads and a mug of fruit tea.

Anyone else enjoy a cuppa in the afternoon with maybe a cupcake, scone, biscuit, cheese scone, slice of malt loaf, lemon drizzle cake, etc, etc, or even just a cuppa?

Oh, I wish I could. But my appetite for things like that would be insatiable...I've no self control. And wheat is not my friend. I adore shortbread 😍. I hope you enjoyed yours.

A coffee with a square of very dark chocolate would suit me.

Question Author

Hello pasta, how're you doing? I love shortbread and have to be very strict with myself or I'd eat the whole packet.

Im not keen on very dark chocolate, I like the taste but don't like the way it doesn't melt in my mouth. I always have some in to put in chilli though.

Just had a coffee & a slice of my homemade cherry cake.

Question Author

What's your cherry cake like, Sharon, a sponge cake with cherries in or more complicated?

Basic flour, egg, almond essence & milk. Plus a box of glace cherries. My next cake will be coconut with desiccated coconut & a few cherries. I will use coconut milk too.

Always have a cup of builders tea around 4.00 with one of those butter biscuits covered in thick chocolate which overlaps the edges. I eat all the chocolate from the edge first. Can't remember the name of them

I'm fine, thanks vagus. A bit bored with this endless rain though.

I used to bake a lot, using mostly recipes from a little book that was my mother's. Favourites were an almost black chocolate cake, Maryland gingerbread cake, and a streusil* topped coffee cake. I usually ate most if it.

* like buttery crumble

Omg vagus, I haven't had that shortbread for years! So so lovely!

Just eating a fruit tea cake with a little butter on, with cup of tea

 Very nice!

Love shortbread. I made some a few weeks ago, so easy.

Ooh Sharon, your next cake sounds loverly 😋

Are they oblong biscuits Margo? If they're the ones I'm thinking of, I do that too 😉

Dont you bake at all now, Pasta? I don't like baking, it's too faffy for me, OH is the baker in this house but only bakes on high days and holidays.

Question Author

Patsy, we had toasted tea cakes and coffee this morning in our favourite cafe while we were out shopping, was yours toasted?🍪

Smow, there's something about the shape of petticoat tails which makes them seem more indulgent.

No, not toasted, Vagus, but I do like them that way. I usually just cut them in half and spread a little butter on.

Question Author

We've enjoyed quite a few 'proper' afternoon teas over recent years, with fancy sandwiches, cakes, scones, and a bottomless teapot. They haven't half varied though, some of the nicest and most reasonably priced have been in garden centres.
One of the absolute best ones was at Danesfield House which was very posh but not the least bit pretentious, and the food was totally wonderful.
Another was in Edinburgh, I can't remember the name of the hotel, at the top of Princes Street. Very old fashioned but very nice.

Both of these were gifts from the children.

Anyone had afternoon tea somewhere unmissable (or absolutely missable)??

Just had 2 crumpets and tea in a china cup, after a couple of hours relaxing fishing this afternoon. Wonderfull!!

These all sound so yummy!

Question Author

Love a crumpet 😋 Tea in a china cup, blimey, posh or what!!!!! 😉

I have baked a lemon drizzle cake this afternoon.  I will have a piece as my dessert with a cuppa shortly.

I had an afternoon tea party for my 80th birthday a few years ago.  Almost £20 a head for a few egg and cress, cheese and pickle sandwiches and cake. Not my best party..

Where was that Thisoldbird?

18.51. Not really posh but love tea out of such a cup. Its all part of a large set that many people have no interest now.

15 cups and saucers.

20 dinner plates

35 side plates 2x different sizes

2 big serving dishies

2 big platter plates

2x milk jugs

2x sugar pots

1x butter dish

One large tea pot

One large coffee pot

15 small coffee cups

Salt a pepper pot.

59years old and not a crack or chip to be seen anywhere or fading. A lot of these kind of sets are worth very little, this one is. It used to get used a lot, but not to much now. My other half also still uses the cups and side plates. Tea does taste better from a china cup. Not much point in just looking at such and not using it for what it was made for.😃
