Having just measured my height, I was surprised to find that I am now 1 inch shorter than I have been in the past. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, three years ago. Is this a factor or is loss of height an age thing?

Are there any exercise you can do safely to specifically stretch out your spine? I am considering joining a yoga class. I still have my old yoga mat somewhere.

I walk stooped over now from fear of falling backwards and hitting my head. Once or twice I've had dizzy spells and, had I not had a walking stick, I would have fallen.
I used to be 5'10". I'm not that now.
The height loss is usually replaced by an expanding girth!

Thank you all for your informative and useful advice.
I seem to be getting taller as I get older.
Whenever I have to bend down to pick anything up from the ground and get back up again, the ground is a hell of a lot further down than it ever used to be, therefore, I must be taller. ;-)
I get lots of spam e-mails offering to add inches -would you like me to forward them?
Also older people tend to get rounded shoulders so their head drops that shows up in the measurement. Look in the mirror while you stand sideways, how straight is your back? I know a guy who is 90, 30 years ago he had straight back now he's like the hunch back of Notre Dame!
I have always been careful to avoid stooping and hunching, being very tall it has always been a natural inclination to do so when talking to shorter people

I have now signed up to two yoga classes per week. I haven't been to yoga classes for years and will be useless to begin with. However I'm going to give it a go. I do not want to get any shorter.
