Feeling very lost and in so much pain I don’t know what else to do.
Had huge fall in bathroom on Monday morning - cut v long story short after ambulance called, CT scans, MRI etc I have a compressed fracture of spine, and another fracture right above. All sent to parent hospital neurosurgeons etc who think at mo I don’t need surgery, but to keep in body spinal brace until pain is under control, which it isn’t yet. Cannot sit up, stand up, which they have tried me to do but the pain is off the scale. Am on tablet morphine, codeine, and oral morphine twice a day plus IV paracetamol. Brace is so so uncomfy and not sure what it’s even doing but is just digging in to me. Can’t seem to get any sense out of anyone what on earth I’m meant to do when I get home as I can’t even sit up here in a hospital bed - can’t even change any part of clothing as cannot bend whatsoever. They just keep saying speak to doctor next week/pain relief team……. Will they make me stay here till I can stand?? Again I can’t get an answer out of anyone and I just can’t take much more like this. It’s a manic department anyway so feeling utterly lost and alone.
Can anyone offer any advice on usual recovery please?? Anything at all would be so appreciated.
Xx

Don’t concern yourself about going home just yet, it’s early days .
Don't feel alone - as long as you are posting - I would say all of the Abers are here with you. You keep fighting.
I am sorry to hear about your pain, I sincerely hope you will get some help and relief soon
Any update from the doctors today, Smow?

Sorry just seen this - still here, no let up on pain yet but they are adjusting it daily to see what combo works best. Body brace is so so uncomfortable. Physio came round today and aim is to get me to try to sit on edge of bed, then with frame(and dosed up on meds beforehand) to try and pull myself up to stand in some way, then from that to try and sit in a chair - albeit it with a donut cushion. So baby steps but this is the short term aim. Cannot be even considered to go home until I can somehow get about with the body brace. They want me to stay downstairs when I eventually get home for at least a few weeks whilst I continue healing, and to not even attempt the stairs…….. so lots ahead to try and think of but just trying to get thru one day at a time at the moment x

Where would I be without you lot. xx

Trying to lighten our mood here the others in my bay were talking about how they’ve ended up here. The woman who was admitted an hour ago lives in Wales ( this hospital is Greater London. ) and she drove all the way down yesterday morning to visit her elderly mum who had fallen and broken her wrist. Gets to her mums house yesterday afternoon - after a couple of hours she gets up to go to the loo, trips & falls down the stairs, & breaks her ankle in two places!! Surgery this morning to plate/screw it back into place. Couldnt make it up could you. And she’s meant to be flying to Barbados on Saturday.
Oh my, what a mess.

Have they worked out why you are falling?
Blimey Smow, that is bad. But as others have said better to stay where you are ( I know it's crap in a hospital ) until they get that terrible pain sorted out, stay online and chat to us lot on AB. Hope they sort that pain out for you soon and you get the ' get out of jail free ' card.
I've just seen this thread. Sorry to hear of your injury smow.

My psychiatrist once told me that hospital is the last place that you want to be if you are feeling ill. But for you, it may be the best thing to do.

I hope that it isn't too long before you can move without the muscle spasms. Stay where you are, at least they have some nice painkillers.

Only thing that popped up on todays latest test results is that my sodium levels are a bit low, but apparently that isn’t uncommon in people with an underactive thyroid like me?
I see.
Pills and potions didn't work for my OH after a serious leg operation . The only relief was from being on a morphine drip. I do hope that they find something soon to control your pain.
Thanks for the update smow.

You haven't got an underactive thyroid as you are taking thyroxine.
I cant see any relation to your thyroid causing your low sodium.
It can't be that low otherwise you would have an I.V drip.
Don't worry about it.

Hi everyone. Daily update - codeine etc stopped as they say they’re constipating me (not ‘been’ since I was admitted 11 days ago. Have been on laxative sachets, liquid lactulose, softening capsules, and now a suppository this eve - all to no avail!) So now on blue tablet Sevedrol morphine, paracetamol, and ibuprofen.
Get Mr Smow to buy some easy peeler oranges. They might just kick start your digestive system.
