i guess it depends what the trouble is with your back, but I've had back problems for over a decade and my Chiropractor is constantly telling me to go to Pilates.
I have a lower back problem but go to pilates, which seems to help. Although you must mention to your instructor what the problem is. Ususally in pilates classes the instructor will show different levels for each move, and tell you which one would be better for you to do. My instructor is very helpful in doing that and always pays attention to those who may have injuries, to enable you to work around that, but to also feel the benefit. Definitely worth a go.
there may be the odd exercise you cant manage but 90% of pilates is fine . the instructor should advise you on the ones that may not be suitable.
