Can anybody tell me how I can wake up feeling as if I have been fighting a war in bed.
Particularly legs and knees. I must thrash about - so get up - have to wait a few moments, walking slowly to the bathroom - feeling everything in my knees and back.
Bed is comfy, room is cooled and darkened.

if however this is a recent and a debilitating situation and is causing you concern, then see your GP.
My bet still stands............wear and tear, commonly felt after a period of rest (joint inactivity)

Sqad's suggestion that inactivity is the explanation seems to me much more likely than "thrashing about" - if you are in a less than comfortable position for long or even a familiar one for too long then muscles, ligaments, etc. will receive less fluid circulation and start to complain as soon as you begin to wake up. Also, the bed may not be as good for you as you may think, it is particularly unhelpful if it is soft and/or springy.
