I was dreading having these done today but I had no pain during the procedure. Time will tell if they will ease my pain BUT tonight I have my sense of smell back & haven't been able to taste or smell for some years. It was delightful realising this when cooking my dinner tonight. Could the steroid injection today brought it back??

No idea. But good to hear of your improved senses.
Hi....I had to google facet joint injection....fascinating... I have no idea how it can help with your sense of smell...intriguing....

Will you let us know how things go......x
Yes it could well have been the effect of the steroid, some of which "leaked " out of the joint capsule.
You loss of smell and taste may well have followed a viral infection or am allergy which has responded to the injection.
Well played.
That's wonderful, I can't imagine being without smell or taste x

Well, I could smell my coffee this morning. I can't remember when I last had my sense of smell & taste. It is divine! I do have all-year-round allergic rhinitis & take anti histamine pills on a daily basis for this. I am usually full of mucus in the morning but today my sinuses are completely clear. I am just hoping this continues! Thank you all for your replies x
good news pleased for you x
Excellent news!
It won't continue.
Why not ask you GP for long term steroid spray for your nose.......even medium term?
Question Author
I realise it won't continue Sqad but I'm making the most of it. Yes, I'm seeing my GP next week so will ask him for the steroid nasal spray which I presume isn't available at a chemist?
Just to put the alternative view over- I had the same as you my whole life until I was 33, and then I did a 'detox' diet (Carol Vordeman's book) and after a fortnight of eating no wheat/gluten/dairy/meat/sugar/salt/alcohol/caffeine, and feeling like I had had the worst flu ever, ALL the mucus in the land came out of my head, and for the first time in my life I could breathe through my nose, and smell. This, I now realise, was due to giving up dairy. If you want to be free from steroids (which are amazing healers but they mask the underlying cause of the problem), try a simple food elimination for a couple of weeks and see if you can fix it the natural way?
Question Author
thank you for your reply Scarlett. Unfortunately I do not think an elimination diet would help me. I have had two operations in the past to remove nasal polyps & to chisel away a small piece of bone at the top of my nose. The first one was done, at ENT hospital, Grays Inn Road, London & second one at an ENT section at a local hospital. I have now bought the Beconase nasal spray which contains a steroid & will use that for the next few weeks to see how things go. My sense of smell & taste is still there following my facet joint steroid injection on Thursday. I am enjoying the smells (apart from the dog!) and the taste of food
I need to have nasal polyps removed too, but please don't knock the detox diet until you've tried it for at least 4 weeks! :)
