Every night I'm woken up by what sounds like the Queen Mary docking in the back yard. Can someone please tell me of any effective remedies to stop snoring before I smother my boyfriend with a pillow while he sleeps?

If your boyfriend is overweight and drinks a lot then you've no hope other than a diet and abstinence (from the drink that is!). If neither of these things then really there are only a few effective tratments. The most effective is surgery to tighten the flap of skin/membrane at the back of the mouth that causes snoring. There are also chemicals which are said to be partly effective (ask a pharmacist/doctor). Other than that snoring is often lessened when sleeping on the side - an old fashioned cure is to sew something into the back of a pyjama top to make it uncomfortable to lie on your back. Sleeping slightly propped up will also help. Snooring is horrible to live with and it needs to be taken seriously. At the very least your boyfriend's sleep (and your's) is being ruined. More serious is a condition called sleep apnoea, a condition where snooring is so bad that oxygen levels are seriously reduced. This can lead to a heart attack and death. If when snooring your boyfriend seems to stop breathing for more than a couple of seconds at a time, get him to consult a doctor
Have you tried those Breathe Easy (I think that's what they're called) strips that you stick across the bridge of your (or your boyfriend's, rather) nose? They're supposed to keep your airways clear and they worked for me. I must confess, I was the snorer and my poor partner suffered for years before we gave those a shot.

Thanks for your replies. My boyfriend is possibly a little overweight but realistically speaking - that isn't going to change! He sleeps topless so the pyjama thing won't work, though I did once consider duct taping a tennis ball to his back but I figured him moving about in his sleep a lot would probably not give either of us a better nights sleep. We have briefly considered surgery but it seems a bit drastic and we ruled it out after hearing that the actor that plays Jim McDonald in Corrie nearly died following anti-snore surgery. I dont think he's got sleep apnoea - many's the night I've lain awake praying that he would stop breating but he never has! Ha ha. I'm very interested to hear if shop-bought 'nostrums' like Breathe Easy really work before I spend my hard earned cash on them - thanks ravenhair, I give that one a go.
Yes - Breath Easies work - at least until the snorer works out a (subconscious) way to combat them and snore freely again (in my experience)!
I strongly suggest you take up sailing....
