Please enter both the advantages and the disadvantages.

Perhaps I should start off, yes I know that the NHS could not work today, without the valuable work of the foreign Surgeons, Doctors, Nurses and auxiliary staff, but then one has to ask, how did we manage before mass immigration?

Before mass immigration, one could speak their mind, without the constant looking over one's shoulder, to see if one had offended anyone.

The words political correctness, racist, bigot, xenophobic, islamophobic etc had little or no airing.

Could the UK exist without immigration?

No of course not and never has, but the right type of immigrant is needed, those who are prepared to integrate and also bring in skills that are an advantage to the UK.

Edging your bet, are we?
Impossible to answer, as we'd be only guessing at how the UK would be if immigration had been different.

Business have always argued for immigration, and it is they that fuel the economy. So without those extra workers, our GDP might not be as high as it is now.

But it is the wrong debate about an hypothetic alternative. What we should be deciding is after brexit how are we going to control immigration in the future.
Before mass immigration,
Not on the scale we have seen it.
Before mass immigration, when would that be then?
What is now the UK has been subject to mass immigration since at least the last ice age when the rising sea level formed the 'Channel' and the 'North Sea'.

Mention "before mass immigration" and most people would automatically assume a certain period.

But apparently not, judging from this ABers history lesson.
Aog...did you mean,'Hedging your bet'?
how is this news?
Pointless question. Immigration has been a factor in bristling development for thousands of years.

'Before mass immigration, one could speak their mind, without the constant looking over one's shoulder, to see if one had offended anyone'

You've got to laugh. You're never ever bothered about speaking your mind or offending anyone. You do it on an almost daily basis.
Britain's development.....
Lol...too true,Zacs!

....and No,aog,i meant Yes!..lol
There have been many 'mass immigration's' to the UK.
The earliest recorded were the Roman Invasions from 55 BC.
But the largest in terms of number of 'immigrants V native inhabitants' has to be the Norman Invasion of 1066.. This totally changed the face of the country with 'immigrants' far outnumbering the previous residents.
But of course that is not what you mean!
You mean immigration by people whose skin is a different colour to the indigenous North European population.

Very interesting reading, sevenOP.

Especially, as recently as 1939 the Indian population of the City of Birmingham was estimated at 100, that is almost unbelievable.

/// The estimated West Indian population in the United Kingdom at 31st December, 1957 was 99,823. The 1991 Census put the black population at 890,727. ///

/// As recently as 1939 the Indian population of the City of Birmingham was estimated at 100 -- that is, one hundred. The total of both Indians and Pakistanis in Britain in 1955 was 10,700.40 The 1991 Census put the number of Indians and Pakistanis at 840,255 and 476,555 respectively, and 162,835 Bangladeshis. ///
Ah, now we're getting to the real issue as perceived by AOG.

Yes there are still some of us left, who are not afraid to speak our minds.

But believe me, there are also millions who at present are, and it is those you should be scared of, because the volcano is at the moment dormant, but bubbling away all the time, and there will come a time when it will erupt.
