Ina nutshell......Liothyronine is T3

All, well, almost all T3 comes from T4.

T4 is thyroxine.

So, for an under-active thyroid one can give either T3 or T4.

T4 is cheaper and anyway supplies T3...so treating an underactive thyroid with T4 is obvious, for all the reasons given.
"How good is it"

Sorry, I pontificated but didn't answer your question.
If your TSH and T4 are normal but your T3 is low, then it may be...just maybe....very good but in combination with thyroxine.

Is there such a thing as low T3 syndrome requiring T3 replacement only? That is the great medical debate. Me? I think that in that case there may well be a case for combination therapy T3 AND T4.

I am taking this as have had the thyroid gland removed
O.K....then there must be a good reason why it was chosen over thyroxine.
Do you live in the Uk and do you get it on the NHS?
Question Author
Yes to both questions
O.K thanks, then in answer to your question, it is very good.....none better ...and for you, a life saver.
