My grandfather served with them in South Africa and in the First World War, but his service records were burned in WW2. We can trace nothing about him at all.

The A&S Highlanders have a kind of research facility on line, starting at a donation of £25.00, but giving absolutely no details or information as to the usefulness of the search.

Has anyone used them or something similar??

Jenny.......Have you tried the Scottish Infantry Records Office which used to be in Perth, but has been moved to York a few years ago.?

Many of these types of sites do charge fees though, but I have no idea of how reliable the A&S one you mention is.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks, will give them a go.
So far as I know there was never any fire at the Scottish Infantry Records Office in Perth where his records would be during WW2.

Keep pushing them for free information. !!
I had never heard of the records office (I live in Perth) and checked on Google. It seems to have moved to York in 1963.

We have a Black Watch museum
There was quite a "Stuchie" in Parliament about it bring moved away from Perth to be relocated in York. But in the 60s this sort of outrage was commonplace ie removing employment out of Scotland to England.

These chickens are coming home to roost now though with the rise of Nationalism, and indeed have been the main cause of the success of the SNP here.

Thanks to all. Will keep at it.
The Ancestry website has military records.
I'll go check and come back later

Just searching Ancestry.com on Argyll and Sutherland in the military collection gives 14 million results - war service, medal rolls, diaries, deaths and the like.

If there is any way you can give me a name, I'd be happy to search - I have lots of spare time.

I've traced my ancestry back to Edinburgh in the late 1600s

Dear Venator,
Just found your response.
If you could look up Alexander FITZPATRICK, I would be very grateful.
Thanks
