Friend's Computer Hacked

I stupidly answered an email purporting to be from a friend - thought the text was a bit odd but the penny didn't drop. Anyway, she rang to say her computer had been hacked.
I'd appreciate any help as to what I do now - obviously won't answer any more odd emails!

Change your email password

Virus scan your computer and if you have any passwords saved on it, change them.

change your email password, should do the trick. Your own email hasn't necessarily been hacked, though it sounds as if hers may have been. If you're worried something evil got in via the email you could run a scan with Malwarebytes (free to download). You've probably got some sort of antivirus program already on your computer?

By answered; do you mean you clicked on a link within the email?

Run a full scan with your anti-virus software.

Then download, install and run the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/
(NB: When installing it take care to deselect the pre-ticked option to take a free trial of the Premium version).

Then use System Restore to take your computer's registry back to the most recent available date prior to opening the dodgy email. (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore).

nopbody's got time to doublecheck the source of every email they get, but having an antivirus system working should block problems.

I feel very reassured - thank you for all the help - hopefully the antivirus scan plus malware scan then a systems restore may sort the problem.
