Hi there Ive scared myself stupid I am on metformin 1000mg twice daily for the last 12 hours Ive been feeling nauseated and shivery and no appetite I had lunch with a ham and cheese roll and a packet of crisps. took 2 metformin then but feeling nauseated and did not have anything for tea I ate a doughnut at 3 this morning as I had a hypo of 3.1 so as I have gallbladder problems was thinking the nausea and shiveryness could be caused by that now I stupidly went on google and found lactic acidosis as a rare side effect of metformin and it says nausea and chills are part of the symptoms blood sugar is fine 6.3 only very mild abdo pain im staying away from google in the future as lactic acidosis has freaked me out. Is there a chance I could have it Ive been on metformin for 4 years so its not a new thing.

Unless Sqad is around it's unlikely that anyone here will have the expertise to provide a definitive answer. (I suspect that even Sqad wouldn't be able to give you such an answer anyway without being able to give you some tests).

I've also been doing a bit of googling and the symptoms you describe do seem to match up with lactic acidosis. e.g. see here:
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Hepatitis-B/Pages/Treatment.aspx
However, without the need for any googling at all, it seems obvious to me that they also matchup with countless other things (e.g. 'flu or even a hangover!).

As I read it, you're not going to drop dead between now and when your GP's surgery opens in the morning. So try to get some sleep but set your alarm so that you can phone as soon as they open (or, better still, walk through their doors at that time). Tell the receptionist that you're concerned that you might be seriously ill and insist on seeing a GP (any GP, not necessarily your own) as soon as possible.

I've come to the conclusion that googling medical issues sometimes isn't the best place for a person with depression/anxiety issues, along with physical problems as well.

You appear to fall into this category gordie, from reading your posts and freaking yourself out isn't the best thing just now.

Try and relax, listen to some quiet music and 'switch off' if you can, see your gp as soon as, and have these problems sorted out
\\\\ Is there a chance I could have it Ive been on metformin for 4 years so its not a new thing.\\\

The chances of you having lactic acidosis is as likely as a rocking horse producing manure.

Don't Google medical terms.

Lactic acidosis can be the very late stage of many diseases seen in very ill patients do to other usually long standing problems e.g heart disease.
This is not you.

Keep off medical websites and go to bed.
I was on metformin 30 yrs ago for a short time. It made me feel nauseous. so bad even the smell of cooking made me feel sick. You will have to come off it. There are other things you can take, like Victoza which is injected.

I can't say that I have heard of those symptoms, except when I am hypo, with metformin. I am on the same dose as you for the last 7 years or so. Have a word with your diabetes nurse or the doctor. Ruthie xx
