I know this is generally considered a NO NO - because of something called serotonin syndrome.

my question is - how much is dangerous?

could you take, 20mg of citalopram per day and also 50mg of 5HTP?

i know some people are on 40mg of citalopram per day - (or some even 60mg i think) - and the highest tablet of 5HTP is 100mg (i think)

so would it be ok to take 20mg of citalopram and 50mg of 5HTP?

is it not so much the amount of serotonin but rather the two different sources or types together that cause the problem?

i may be misunderstanding what serotonin syndrome is you see

thanks

5HTP ?
I wouldn't. Why not ask GP to increase the citalopram if necessary?

yes hydroxytryptophan
You might find this reference of some interest, Joko;

Does not answer your question directly - but explains why there is a concern about the interaction of an SSRI like citalopram with 5HTP and possible adverse effects consequent upon a higher than normal serotonin level in the body.

I would definitely think you should be consulting with your GP regarding such a combination.
