It depends what type of Windows install you did. Certain Windows installs get rid of everything off the hard disk so you lose everything on the computer.

Sometimes the old files are placed in a file called windows.old so see if you have a windows.old folder on your hard disk.

As a matter of interest WHAT told you all your existing stuff would go in a temp file, I am not sure I have ever seen a message like that.
Try START, SEARCH, Files and Folders. Select "All files and Folders" and enter *.tmp in the first space, Click on SEARCH and see what turns up. You may have quite a few Temp files to check on but at least it should tell you where they are.
I've never used Vista so it may not work.
Best of luck.

Hi VHG,
I put in the recovery discs, and it said at the start that it would transfer all photos and files into a temp folder, and I would need to view them later. this was the built in recovery disc that you have to download to cd when you get the machine.
