got told at the opticians today that I need glasses, £20 eye test then, £99 glasses (granted it was 2 for 1) :-) and £30 to have anti glare treatment on one of the pairs, which probably costs them about 10p! daylight robbery!

Why not go to Glasses Direct or another internet spec provider.
I've had lots of specs from Glasses Direct and am very pleased by their service.
Benny, that's not expensive at all. I have to pay up to £600 for my lenses, varifocals with various treatments and coatings on the lenses.
so you got one pair of glasses for 45 quid and the other pair for 75 quid?
Could you have chosen cheaper frames?
Got mine at the £1 Shop, was told by the guy at Opticians, after my Free Eye Test, that was all I needed.
That's cheap!!
As someone who wears glasses occasionally 9contacts normally) I had to pay well over £200 for my last pair of glasses around 15 years ago (compressed glass, anti glare, one for one) so yours sound rather inexpensive to me I'm afraid
That`s quite cheap actually.

yes, admittedley, i could have chosen cheaper frames, but I chose the ones I 1.liked and 2.I thought would last me a while. even with the cheaper frames, they are expensive for what they are, aren't they?
That is very cheap.
Do you work on a computer benny? IF so you can claim the £20 from your employer. Take the receipt in tomorrow.
I paid over £270 for one pair!!!
I went to specsavers and could have got a cheaper pair, but I did not like
any of them.

yes, i do work on a computer, i might try to claim it back from employer although i dont want to p!ss him off. we get on really well. you'd think with them being such small things, they'd be fairly cheap, they cant cost much to make.
..but the glasses are tailored to your requirements benny, if your eyes need them - it's not like buying a tie.

We can only claim back money for glasses for work if we've had a VDU assessment and it's been recommended, and then only if we use the specs principally for work - not if we need them anyway.
should have gone to specsavers..........
I usually have to pay at least £500 but you are right. We are being ripped off.
Question Author
I suppose it's another one of those things, like car insurance, you have to have it, so the price can be high.
I went to Specsavers I got two pairs for about £280. I thought I'd been ripped off. I had varifocals with anti glare coating for £30 extra, the frames were expensive, but supposedly buy one get one free. At one time I bought glasses from the supermarket for £5-£10 and I admitted it to the optician when I went for a proper eye test. The Optician said they were Ok to use, only when my eyesight deteriorated in one eye would I need corrective lens.
Just ask you employer nicely. We get ours paid at work and we all get on with each other too. Maybe say you saw a notice up in the optician and wondered if you could get yours paid on petty cash?

thanks for the advice maidup, i will possibly have a word with him on Monday about it.
PS Boxy - I suggested benny claim for the eye test, not the glasses.
