Should these school children have been given such a subject matter, in their letter writing exam?

No. How can children understand what is going on? In any case they should not be involved in teachers politics.
I'd have thought not; but since it says some of the kids didn't even know what a pension was, it's clear there was a learning element in this.
Nothing new, lefty teachers have been brain washing kids for years.
sounds like a good capitalist lesson to me: you don't pay your staff properly, they leave, you don't have a school, so you have to go to work up the chimneys.
No, it's nothing to do with them, their business is learning, the teachers business should be teaching.
It seems this was the work of one teacher. The school has accepted it was inappropriate and has apologised.
Another sensationalised headline from the Daily Mail
And if you read it they were not asked to write to the PM they were set an assignment of writing a letter ....
Is that wrong? Don't know - had the headline been correct, then yes, it would have been wrong
It must be wrong as the teacher who set the question is in for a rollicking, it wouldn't be too bad if it was a lesson and a debate (although still too young in my opinion) but it wasn't, it was for an entrance exam so not much would have been learnt by the children. Biased politics has no place in a school.

Yes, "they were set an assignment of writing a letter to the Prime Minister".

How else can you find the headline was wrong?
The school is aiming to train "wealth creators"

I would have thought this question was eminently suitable in spotting pupils with a grasp of how the world works.
"they were set an assignment of writing a letter to the Prime Minister"
When I was at school we were set an assignment of writing to Francis Bacon. I don't think anyone actually expected us to post the letters, and the same applies here. It's an exercise.
Hey rojash, is that Francis Bacon the artist - a good subject for schoolchildren maybe a tad too young to know of him, but left wing politics is a definite no-no.
Nope, it was FB the philosopher

No mention in the headline about 'posting it'.

By the way haven't you turned a funny colour? :0)
Some of these kids were on TV last night, they had no idea about politics apart from the fact that they'd been told they'd be in huge debt if they went to University. They'd had a meeting with George Osborne, they had not a clue who he was - one asked if he was related to Sharon Osborne, LOL.
is George Osborne the one who bites the heads off bats? Probably just as well the kids didn't know.
Sorry to nudgescuffle but rojash's avatar (which you mentioned, AOG) looks much better on his profile as it has Christmas trees and other extras on it.
LOL no jno, that's Ozzy, but it might as well have been!
my OH once long ago had to act as Ozzy's minder, boxtops - apparently he was a real sweetie but had a tendency to vanish on his motorbike without telling anyone.
some of them might still be writing to Santa Clause, might get a quicker response if they do,
