How on earth can the govt sanction this when the NHS is in dire straits ? its going to cost approx £800 per birth ! yes if its a medical necessity of course but on a whim, what about the extra complications it brings, longer stay in hospital etc, have they thought it through properly.Spend the money on training more midwives.
Before you ask, yes I have had three natural births.

madness Dee...madness :-(
How much would a natural birth cost? Say for a woman is in labour for 48 hours.
I don't know how the costs stack up............I went into maternity hospital on Sunday and didn't have the daughter until the Tuesday.
But how much does the midwife cost if you're in labour for hours? And not that im expert, but im willing to bet that even with a caesarean you're not in hospital afterwards for all that much longer than if you'd given birth naturally.
That's what I'm wondering Craft. 48 hours in labour, how much would that cost in just midwifes wages?
sorry ummmm and craft, didn't really notice that you'd asked the same thing.
there would have to be aftercare as well BOO, a woman, having had a C Section won't be as mobile as a one who has given birth naturally, I would have thought
Ceasers loosen stomach muscles which have never firmed up in cases I've known.
I'm willing to bet in this day and age Bobbs, that aftercare is pretty minimal after a C section.

Like I said, im no expert, so I could be wrong :-)
maybe you are right BOO, when it comes to Gynea Ops now, they are in and out in 48 hrs, I suppose this is a good thing
Seems to be it's legitimising what is almost the status quo - or certainly was when my kids were born. There were two mothers in then getting a Cesarean for no real medical reason.

"Too posh to push" isn't it called?
My little nephew was a caesarian birth. You can't really tell, except whenever he leaves a room he goes out the window.
It is very minimal now BOO.

Tambo....that's not so much the case anymore. It's pregnancy that loosens the muscles...
My cat Mum Puss gave birth to 3 kittens in one go. Does this count as 3 natural births or just the 1?
counts as a bloody miracle if you're the father Jonny.
^ ;-p
Maybe the extra cost of caesareans is less than the cost of the compensation payouts when natural births go wrong. I can`t think of any other reason so sanction such a thing.
the correction is that apparently a c-sec costs about £800 'more than' a natural birth- presumably because of the additional experts required during the procedure.

but given that a private maternity programme at the portland costs around £10k, £800 aint that much.

also a c-sec is still quite a major operation and not the easy option that people seem to believe. certainly not for mrs kou.
ummm, normal births leave most with good shape in later life.

More are done in summer so medics can plan their hols, mine were. Refuse the convenience I say, as you pay later with big stomachs.
Excellent idea.

Most women would elect to savour the "joys of becoming a mother " and giving birth would be a "wondrous event " for all to behold.

Others would say "stuff all that wondrous talk" just get the baby out as painlessly as possible.

The on-call acoucheurs would say " thank God, lets get the Caesars over with during the day so that I can have a good night's sleep"

CS are safer than to the mother than normal births.
