if it was with them id change, unless they all had the same policy, perhaps better to put money under the mattress...
Me too, em. I wish that I was with them, so that I could bank elsewhere. I would urge anyone who banks with them to change banks, so that this will not be the thin end of the wedge.
aren't they the most ungrateful bstards, taxpayers bail them out, they still don't lend to businesses, and now can't use atm without a charge, id tell them to stick it
How else are they going to get the money to pay the massive bonuses to those who make a complete mess of running the company and then get paid off?

as nat west is part of rbs the same apples
This was announced weeks ago. It is only for those with the most basic bank accounts. A standard current account is not affected. It's the other banks that are charging RBS around 40p for each withdrawal so RBS have decided to take this action. These basic account holders can still draw cash from RBS machines.
It does seem to be a an unwise move politically though.
We do seem to have an unreasonable expectation in this country that
I would close my account, what a bloody nerve these Banks have
I think RBS/NatWests would actually be glad if these basic acount holders cnged banks. These basic accounts are not cost effective to manage and were onlly introduced as a part of a government initiative aimed at 'financial inclusion'
I think though it is a mistake by RBS because people have misunderstood and probably think it applies to all RBS/Nat west accounts.
The RBS customers can still use machines at NatWest, the Post Office, and supermarkets Tesco and Morrisons free of charge.
I read that Lloyds have had a similar charge in place for 2 years.

I think there will be political pressure to remove the restrictions, but given that banks charge each other round 40p every time someone checks their balance or withdraws cash from their machine, the machine network has to be paid for somehow. The charges will therefore probably creep back in some other form
"How soon they forget that we taxpayers baled them out"

They neither remember nor forget, they couldnt care less who bailed them out, they couldnt give a schitt for the taxpayer
presumably the taxpayer bailed them out in the expectation that they would in future be run properly as a going business. And that's what they're doing: cutting unnecessary costs.
Not only can these customers use Post Office cash machines, they can get cash out at any Post Office counter, free of charge. This applies to customers of Royal Bank of Scotland, Natwest, Barclays, LLoyds TSB, Ulster Bank, Co-op Bank, and old Alliance and Leicester accounts. (I'm sure I've missed one or two banks off there - sorry, but there's a lot to remember!).
My answer is to avoid banks that either have shareholders or pay massive bonuses to its whiz kids. Maybe a mutual building society like Nationwide fits the bill.
Due to recent changes it is likely that Bank charges will be re introduced back into this country. The Banks are not charities and even mutuals will need to pay for someone else to process.

There seems to be odd views here simply based on loathing of Banks I suspect. I mean, would you purchase some sprouts and then expect the buther opposite to process the transaction for nothing?
