Ugh! How can people do this?

Yesterday my other half and I took the grandchildren for a day trip to the seaside. We parked up on a back street early in order to get free parking. When we returned to the car after a lovely walk on the beach we were horrified to find someone had smeared dog muck all over our car door handles!
I can only assume that it had something to do with the car parked in front as a passer by said he had just seen a couple with 4 dogs get into the car behind ours and drive off.
Why would anyone do this sort of thing?
