You could possibly be having a bout of blepharitis...which is the medical term for inflamed eyelids. "The inflammation is like eczema of the skin, with red, scaly eyelids. You may notice tired, or gritty eyes, which may be uncomfortable in sunlight or a smoky atmosphere. They may be slightly red, and feel as though there is something in them." (Source: WebMD)
The cause is blockage of the small glands in the eyelids that provide lubricant for better tear dispersal... they can become blocked and inflamed.
I've found that (here in the U.S.) the contact lens solution department in your local drug store will have lid wipes... a box of premoistened cotton pads for cleaning the eyelid. I've found that using baby shampoo works just as well. Use two times a day...
The eyelids have tiny glands in them, especially the lower lids. These glands make substances that mix with tears, and help the tears to spread across the eye.
