Curing Insomnia for a twenty something...

My long bout of insomnia started way before the festive season, it's so worst I consider dozing off at 12-1AM an early night, currently I get start to nod off at around 3-5AM, therefore at work I always feel sleepless (not like our office needs optimum employer efficiency, believe me) back home from work I instantly have a nap for about half an hour, than during the evening, sleeplessness.

I am a bit of a worrier since finishing uni a year and a half ago with a ****ing usless degree my life hasn't been as I expected... apart from that I feel easy going, going travelling and also on a long hol in March, and I'm not paying!

Herbal sleeping tablets - if not see the doctor. I also suffer from insomnia every once ina while and when I do I dont get to sleep for ages and I wake up around 6am every morning - its a nightmare.

having a nap when you come in for work is the worst thing you can do!  Resist the urge to go for the nap (or if you absolutely must, limit it to 15 minutes - the optimum 'power kip' time).

 

I suffer sleepless nights and what i would advise is:

  • Use boots or avon sleeptherapy lavender bed spray
  • take some valerian from holland and barratt an hour before bed time
  • dont drink or eat coffee/tea/coke/chocolate after tea time
  • make sure your bedroom is not too hot or cold
  • take a warm bath before bed time
  • drink hot milk as you are going to bed
  • eat brown bread/lettuce/banana before bedtime as they contain chemicals that make you sleepy
  • don't watch tv in bed
  • read for a while in bed til you drop off
Hi Dave - I am also an insomniac, so every night I listen to my spoken words tapes on my personal tape player, with tiny in-ear phones. I usually nod off before I get to the end of a story. This is from someone who would otherwise be awake most of the night!
I used to suffer really bad insomnia while I was at uni.  But then I got a totally knackering job and since then I haven't had problems (touch wood!).  Physical exercise definately helps, and not using tv to wind down.  Also, one thing that often works for me is starting with your head become away of all the sensations in your body- feel your lips, your tongue in your mouth, your hair etc.  all the way down to your toes.  Or else, my boyfriend suggested imagine going down a corridor to a door, and every time you get to a door, the new corridor has a completely different coloured wallpaper and a different coloured door!  Or else relive your favourite holiday in minute detail.  Sharing a bed with someone is also a good cure for insomnia!

Not if the person snores it isn't! lol.
