A friend of mine was playing indoor netball & her achilles tendon went.

She had a choice of plaster for 6 weeks or an operation & 6 weeks of plaster.

She had the operation, did the 6 weeks & was right as rain. Well apart from a bit of physio & general strengthening of the muscles, etc.

It's a relatively easy & safe operation.
severed or stretched? Either way it will be permanent pins in ankle joints, 6w plaster, physio. Strengthening depends on individual. D'ter couldn't drive manual car as no strength for clutch pedal - got an automatic. 1y on - recovered!

thank you both for your answers put my mind at rest a little
tambo is quite correct...depends on whether or not it is torn or strained and even more importantly which part of the Achilles tendon is involved.

He has severed it. He has had a scan and the doctors are going to operate on it on Tuesday. Doctor is hospital said doing your tendon is worse than a break!
A friend of mine ruptured her achilles tendon in the middle of May - she is still in plaster. She had a full leg plaster for 6 weeks, then under the knee plaster for several weeks and is hoping to have it taken off this week.
Not sure what the after care will be, ie physio etc.
I have had both my achilles tendons operated on, the left one 9 years ago and the right in January of this year. I was up and walking the next day. Had crutches but didn't use them after the 3rd day. I had a week off work, mainly to get over the anaethestic .I do sit down nearly all day though. I did have problems though, due to the fact a stitch was left in and my ankle got infected. I also wasn't given any physio until a month ago after complaining to my GP I still had a slight pain. I think I was discharged too early from outpatients. I have been having the physio and am almost fine now.
