under the Data Protection Act, you can ask but certain documents are exempted. you will probably have to put your request in writing, so don't expect it to be handed over when you ask.

Thanks sara, both results on wednesday will be a testosterone count, and fertility count, any ideas if these are ok to have copys of or will be more complicated to get hold of? cheers
it's not really my area, but so far as I know you can have anything that wouldn't be considered as detrimental to your health/well-being. (for example, surprising you with a terminal illness!)

sounds fine to me. I hope your results are good news x

Thanks so much Sara fingers crossed Mwah xxx
yep yu can look at your whole medical records (with certain exemptions), but what might be better is to ask your gp to show you the results and explain them in detail to you (or better still the consultant i guess)

thanks bedknobs i shall ask the urologist to slowly explain everything or if he cant be assd just to give me copies lol
Well how much detail do you want exactly? I think it might be a wise idea for you to sit down and write a list of questions you'd actually like answered rather than requesting copies of information that may mean nothing to you individually. The PA to your COnsultant could fax the results to your GP too and you could ask them the questions but better to make a list and so that your own thoughts are organised and you know exactly what it is you want to understand in order to get the best out of your consultation. (If there are no problems with the results then the Consultant may not understand why you still have questions, they can be an unusual little breed at times).

Thanks China doll, yeah that sounds a good idea i think i will take my notepad and pen along with me,but to be honest i just want to know what my sperm count was exactly just so i know if im super fertile or not so super fertile etc depending on results and i would also like to know about my results so i can check about on here and compare notes with others who have been through the same thing as me,also it will give me more peace of mind if i know exactly how fertile/infertile i am. thanks for the info doll much appreciated x
Well I'm not sure it can be quantified exactly like that Kev, sperm mobility rates aren't exactly super fertile, not fertile at all categories etc... There are occasions when there's absolutely nothing there but other times there's much more to it than just whether you have good sperm or nto.Sometimes there's sperm there but to get it out needs a surgical intervention.

Is it a fertility issue you're actually being seen for or the diabetes? If you're concerned about your fertility in particular and you're just seeing a Consultant in General Urology they might only be able to assist you so far and you could need a referral to an Andrology (male gynaecology basically and under the Urology branch) but to be honest, unless you're actilvely trying to have a child then it's probably a bit of a waste of time at the moment as there's variables depending on your partners fertility too. It's not as cut and dry as whether you have super sperm or not so super sperm.

Its a fertility issue im being seen for doll,i gave my sperm sample in last month and the nurse took my bloods for my testosterone count,i have a varicocele on my left testi you see since i was 15 and im now 26,since its grown in size over the years ive noticed that i dont ejaculate as much also its changed in texture, anyway to cut a long story short ive been in a couple of long relationships without any joy, anyhow my urologist doesnt seemed to worried about my varicocele but its really painful and ive had all the antibiotics for it without anything shifting,im sure its all connected to my varicocele but he does not think so,so depending on my results on Wednesday i will have a better idea. So if im told im fertile Doll does this mean i might not be fertile? or does that only count the other way so say told im not fertile i could well be? sorry if i got u mixed up im actually a bit mixed up myself now lol x
No nothing like that. The Urologist won't tell you you're fertile if you're not but it's just that generally fertility issues are best dealt with when you're actually trying as your partners fertility can come to bear too. Your sperm may have a low mobidity, they might have an inhospitable womb etc... There's other stuff that can happen is all.

Also age may be a factor. I'm pretty sure my body didn't work at 26 the same way it did when I was 15. It's worth considering or asking if that would have a bearing. Plus texture can change for other reasons such as diet. Are you sure you're not focusing on this a bit too much? No offence meant but men can become hyper sensitive when it's their bits involved and they really can become focused on one thing. You've been living wth this for several years and you started this post with talking about your diabetes, moving on to fertility and then on the varicocele; this is why I suggest getting your questions in order as it will help get your head in order which in turn will help our Consultant answer questions. Be careful you're not listening just because he isn't saying either what you want to hear or not understanding because you're focused on something else.

If you've very worried then ask the Urologist if a referal to an Andrologist would be suitable or request a second opinion with one of the other members of Urology.

No worries doll i totally understand what you are saying about this being in my mind and also my Gp suggested this to me but to be honest i just know with the pain i keep feeling that there is something not right but i also agree that this maybe affectin me mentally aswell so i would say it was 50/50 at the moment, and as for the diabetes, well my urologist asked me when i first went,if i had any family with diabetes which i do have quite a few with it,hence why i had the blood test for that,i dont however have diabetes but do have slightly high cholesterol which my urologist never seemed to bothered about and just told me to eat a bit more healthier (which i do anyway) its all just a bit complicated right now and im sure things will become more clear on Wednesday x
