Preventing sore knees when crawling

Hello all. My beautiful little five month old is trying to crawl. Her little knees are getting red with them rubbing on the carpet. I do everything I can to pad her knees with thick clothing and getting her to crawl on padded playmats etc.
Does anybody have any ideas or tips as to how I can help prevent her knees getting so sore? I guess in time her skin will get used to it...but it breaks my heart to see sore little knees!

i used to put vasaline on my sons knees as i had the same problem. it will give them a layer of protection. only prob is you need to re apply about once every hour depending on how much she is doing
