Dry socket

Hi guys

I posted on here last week as i was getting 2 widsom teeth taking out - http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Body-and-Soul/H ealth-and-Fitness/Question612220.html

Anyway, i went to my dentist today as i had a arranged checkup - she wanted to see me anyway to see if my stiches and wounds had closed okay. I told her i thought i had an infection in my lower right as it feels strange yet the upper left is fine - and she took a look and said its dry socket.

She put the most awful foul tasting thing in my mouth, absolutly rank (no idea what it was) and spoke about glass or something to the assistant.

So, she packed it and gave me some ammoxycillian 500mg tabs.

What id like to know is how long it will take for everything to sort out.

Its not painful, just dull pain. Is this likley to get worse? (both pain and infection)

A dry socket is when there is no blood clot, making the hole very slow to heal and it can become infected.

The rinse was an antiseptic, and the antibiotics will start to work in 24 -36 hours, making the pain easier and you should be fully free of infection at the end of the course.

Dry socket is common in smokers. If you do smoke, try not to whilst you have this problem.

Why is it confusing that something that is more common in women (incidentally not borne out by aneqdotal observation) and smokers has happended to you?
Just because its more common in certain groups does not make it impossible to occur in others, besides its multi-factorial.
