Prostatitis cause?

My stepdad gets recurring prostate-itis (can't spell) & is often in a lot of pain with it. The doctor has given him some painkillers but they don't really seem to be doing anything.
Can anyone suggest anything that might help him? Or is there something he could change in his lifestyle to stop it recurring? I don't know if it could be caused by an allergy or something :-/
