Marks on my Varifocals

I recently got a new pair of varifocal glasses.
I took a close look at them yesterday after noticing little white dots when it rains and was suprised to find two diamond shapes (3mm high) etched into each lens throught the centerline and 17 written under 1 diamond and 2.5 under the other. There is also a 4mm high R on each lens.
My Optition says this is normal, but my other Specticals don't have them and I think I'm being fed a load of Garbage.
Can anyone tell me what these marks are for and wether they should really be there.

I've just had a look at my varifocals & they don't have any markings on the lenses.

Mine were were from SpecSavers.
*only one were of course!

I must put them back on!

The markings are 'normal.' Typically they carry the prescription strength and in most cases they are on all glasses, whether we can see them or not. Those markings are not within your normal line of vision and would not interfere with your vision. As for the diamond, I'm not too sure. I could be a manufacture's ID, or it could be related to the varifocal lenses. Perhaps someone in the industry could shed further information on this.

However, you needn't be concerned. This is indeed 'normal.'

I wish you the very best

Thanks VillageVicar and Smudge,
If the marks are on all glasses thats fine. It could be that I can see them because the lenses have a react to light coating as my other two pairs didn't show. However, the marks are in my direct line of sight as I get these little ghost images when I glance sideways such as driving and its a bit unnerving so I'll ask another optitian for some advice.
