my husband is 52 and underwent a quadruple heart bypass 2 years ago. he retired as a civil servant but drives p/t 2 days a week. he gets very tired very quickly and is often breathless but is otherwise in 'good health'. we have never claimed anything in our lives but a neighbour of ours in similar circumstances is in receipt of a disabilty allowance. he states it is due to the fact that he cannot continue as an electrician after heart surgery. he never has problems doing the gardening! what benefits if any are my husband or i allowed? currently i do not 'care' for him but i make his life more comfortable by restricting what he does and i always remind him to take his medication.
a black and white answer is appreciated, please no useless comments, many thks

Essentially if his GP is willing to state that he is unable to work due to his condition and is prepared to sign him of sick, then you are able to make a claim. I don't know exactly what benefits he will or will not be entitiled too, but it's something that is worth pursuing. I'd start with Disability Living Allowance. There are other benefits which he may recieve. There is, however, a lot of form filling, and chasing up at times. It's worth investigating though. Get your GP onside first though.
Contact you local Welfare Benefits Agency. They will be listed under Social Work Department.
They will either visit you and fill in the required forms, or they will give you an address where you can visit them. They will tell you all that your Husband is entitled to.
Good Luck.
