I have been with this NHS dentist surgery for 7 years, although the dentists I see changes from time to time. I have been with this one for about 4 to 5 years. She does not do a thorough Check up, you know looking under your tongue and around your mouth and throat etc.I should have said something months ago, I hinted but she just said she had looked in my mouth. On the way out this week I mentioned to the receptionist what had transpired , she got the dentist to ring me and denied everything, she offered me a place with another dentist that only comes in on a Wednesday. This has left a bad taste in my mouth, excuse the pun.

Change dentist. I mentioned on another thread how my old dentist was happy to just poke about for a few seconds while chatting to her dental nurse how much money she was making.

There are good dentists out there. Ask friends and neighbours for recommendations.
Find a new one first ...nhs dentists very rare and often have full lists.. in the meantime why not give the Wednesday only one a try.....? You will have lost nothing and maybe gained a great dentist. Mine only works one day a week (he is getting on a bit tho' younger than me!) that poses no problem for me.
Unlike a few years ago there's plenty of NHS dentists around nowadays who are taking on new patients; I'd look around for a different practice.
I've never had a dentist look under my tongue and around my throat. Should I have?

Yes Prudie they are looking for lumps and things and the colour of your skin etc
How to chose a dentist:

Go to your nearest dentist and ask them who does their dental work ?
My dentist is a treasure when it comes to treatment, but I must admit the check ups are very minimal these days. However if you're not happy, try the Wednesday one, but don't expect too much from any of them when it comes to checkups, they get minimal fees for these few minutes and are more interested in the treatment sessions. Its all to do with the way they draw down the money these days.
A good dentist I think is like a good GP - It is relative but you could choose the one that appeases you the most after a visit.
I have complete confidence in my dentist but then again I have had the same guy for 20 years now..... nothing to measure it by
I'm not keen on my dentist. My 'old' dentist retired and he was so thorough, the old school really, but I fully trusted him. His replacement sounds just like your dentist tamaris, her check up lasts only a small fraction of my 'old' dentist's and she doesn't have a nurse taking down all the details of my various teeth. I didn't think it was easy to change though.
you get what you pay for.
This is timely, I changed dentists yesterday as I've been on Denplan for about 20 years but can't afford it anymore now I've retired. Just registered with an NHS dentist and was thinking last night about how thorough my previous dentist was and how he always checked for anything odd. Am wondering how the new one will be.
From my experience horselady, the newer ones are not as thorough ...
I've been with the same dentists for years and I've never had any problems apart from the stairs, which was soon cured by transferring to their surgery in the next village along where every thing is on the ground floor.
Mate of a mates mate has been with the same dentist for over 40 years and he has got dentures .
Mate of etc....or the dentist?
Mates ,mates mate sorry shudder made that clear
I think you just go to another dentist and say 'hi'

I have a plan with Denplan
we all do in the practice

I dont think it is a big deal
You do not 'register' with a dentist in the way you do with a doctor.
Each course of treatment is a new contract between you and the dentist.
So you can go to a different one every time if you like!
