I get nails breaking low down at the sides, my nails are very tough but brittle. I rub in Solar Oil around the cuticles, you can get it on ebay, a few times a day. And plenty of hand cream.
I keep mine short and use a Leighton Denny crystal nail file to file out the beginning of splits. Like smurfy I use a nail moisturiser as well as handcream. My splits seem to start from vertical ridges in the nail and I also find that buffing the ridge off and then buffing the nail helps to stop them splitting but be very careful if you decide to try this. Use a manual buffing system and do it very little and infrequently, I do it only when the ridges are back and the nail is risking a split again....once a month or less.
I started using Healthy Hoof nail cream about two years ago...it's brilliant and worked. I am a cook,and my nails were taking a beating what with exposure to water,cleaning products and heat...my nails lived in numerous coats of varnish. Not good. This cream healed all the peeling edges,and several splits. My nails grew longer and healthier than they'd been in years. It's not perfect,as I still have some problems in the winter....but that's because of the cold drying my nails out.

A short-term solution is to put some super glue on the split.
This enables it to grow out, and the split seems to stop.
Pasta - how often do you use the cream? I think I might get some
Piggy, you can buy jelly ( gelatina ) in any El Corte Ingles supermarket. Flavoured or pure.
I'll try that Jenny-Kenny. My middle R. finger has had a split in t10 yr. I was told the nail bed was damaged and I couldn't do anything. Worth a try!
@237sj...sorry I didn't see this sooner.
...I'd say 2-3 times daily...particularly after having your hands in water. Really massage it into the nails and cuticles.
Thanks Pasta
I am lucky I just keep them short short. Not diverting Piggnose but a word for pasta. I saw you came across the long run 'secret' thread, speak again about it.
Almond oil is very good for your nails. Rub it in to your nails and cuticles once daily. It helps to keep the moisture in and softens your cuticles
@togo...I can't find that thread now. :-((
That thread has been abandoned now pasta. Immediately you found it.
Another one is running though. Below is the last post (Immediately after you asked what the thread was)

//Hello pasta, it's all smoke and mirrors but we've vacated this thread now. :) //

samuraisan, the only gelatina ive seen comes in powder form, i hope this one comes in jelly form.
thank you girls and boys
my nails split during chemo and I wondered about a film that binds the two edges and I will try superglue

The split itself will propagate once started on the usual principles of physics and I try to trim the nail to take in ( or take out ) the split

happens to old people I a afraid !

oh piggy make sure there is no infection

and ladies - my grandmother insisted that if you have always filed your nails then you would never have a split - d.1928
my father commented well since every child cuts his nails the condition is never filled ...... victorian families
PP try the Leighton Denny crystal file after you have trimmed. It seems to seal the edge of the nail and stop the split developing.
As an aside, did anyone else have an MGB? (original wire wheeled sports car not the modern abomination) They were known for having a tendency to split on the door just by the wing mirror. The recognised solution was to drill a hole below the split where the door curved and allow the split to run down to the hole then fill and paint over....maybe not a good idea on human nail though?
O good one woof
utilised the physics principle of the pressures.forces at the point of the split are about as the same as the point of a needle ( big big big that is ! )
Ouch^^. It isn't my nails that split but I do sometimes get a split in my finger or a thumb right next to my nail. Only ever In the winter. I need Mrs Os marigolds.

i have 2 nail problems, one is a split finger nail,the split has been there for long time, straight down the centre, and the other nail is one of my big toenails, which has been a problem for a couple of years now, the nail has stopped growing properly, the doctor gave me some solution which he said had to be applied for a month, but there wasn;t any guarantees, i started to use tea-tree oil recently on a regular basis, but had to stop as it seems i'm allergic to it. so it looks like another trip to the doctors.
I have the odd split nail and I find rubbing in vaseline around all my finger nails and keeping the split filed back level definitely helps. I also have a problem with a big toe nail that "died"at the base and then started regrowth of the new nail, which progressed well but then just stopped. Because I have bad circulation in my feet,I started massaging around the toe and regrowth started up again!
