Last night my friend called to show me a little monitor/box on her side and a blood pressure strap on her arm. She was to carry it for 24 hours and it was doing her head in.

She rang me this morning to say that the the wire came out of the arm strap and she spent 10 minutes trying to attach the tube.

Anybody explain why she had to wear this for 24 hours for high blood pressure cos I never saw that before. Thanks for answers.

It's a very common test - gives a better reading spaced over a full day in different situations rather than just the reading done at the surgery.

I have to agree with your friend though , mine drove me insane.

thanks Mamy for that - she is a very very heavy smoker so I am sure that won't help her.
Well once they have assessed her results any decisions re medications will be discussed.

I'm sure you are right that she will also have been advised to stop smoking too.

Mamy - of all my friends who smoke this would be truly dreadful for her as she admits to me all the time she is an addict. And from experience with her - she climbs the walls for a cigarette, she wanders for open shops in the middle of the night looking for ciggies etc etc. It would be very hard for her indeed.
GP should be able to offer help or direct her to it - but she needs to want to stop.
If she is the same as my neighbor who had the same symptoms she will be given the answer , stop smoking or you will probably be dead before Christmas !
